WMO WWRP 4th International Symposium on Nowcasting and Very-short-range Forecast 2016 (WSN16)

25-29 July 2016, Hong Kong

About the Symposium

The WMO/WWRP 4th International Symposium on Nowcasting and Very short range Forecast (WSN16) will be held in Hong Kong, China, from 25-29 July 2016. The Symposium is jointly organized by WMO/WWRP, Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), The Hong Kong Meteorological Society (HKMetS) and Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability (IEES) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The theme of WSN16 is “From Nowcasting and Mesoscale Modelling Sciences to Services”. Nowcasting is commonly regarded as an end-to-end forecasting process for high impact weather via providing rapidly updated, high precision meteorological products and services from data collection to the end users. The Symposium aims at examining the current state-of-art nowcasting and very short range forecast capabilities, the emerging observation technologies, applications and services, verification and societal impacts in the 0-6 hour time frame. Papers emphasizing on the following topics are most solicited: emerging advanced remote sensing observational platforms; advanced observational-based nowcasting system; satellite-based nowcasting system; lightning nowcasting; low visibility nowcasting; expert systems; advanced high/ultra-high resolution rapidly output numerical weather prediction models; blended extrapolation and NWP nowcasting system; high impact weather; urban meteorology; verification & validation; nowcasting applications; nowcasting services and socio-economical impact. Progress review of WWRP nowcasting-mesoscale modelling research projects including Forecast Demonstration Project/Research Demonstration Project will also be welcomed.

One special session of this Symposium will be dedicated to Aviation Nowcasting, in particular the Aviation Research Demonstration Project (AvRDP) which is a project led by WWRP, in collaboration with the Commission for Aeronautical Meteorology (CAeM) of WMO, to demonstrate the capability of nowcasting and high resolution NWP modelling techniques in support of the development of the next generation aviation initiative to be implemented globally step-by-step in the next 15 years or so. A capacity building Training Workshop focusing on the AvRDP will be held back-to-back with the Symposium to provide nowcasting and mesoscale technology training to interested Members in response to the need of the advancement of aviation meteorological services in the 0-6 hour nowcasting time frame. Detailed on the Training Workshop can be found on this web site.

Symposium sessions will be organized around the following topics:

  1. Forecasting of high impact weather in very-short-range;
  2. New observational instruments;
  3. Advances on mesoscale NWP model, data assimilation, ensemble prediction;
  4. Integration of nowcast and mesoscale NWP;
  5. Urban meteorology;
  6. Transfer of the science on nowcasting and very-short-range forecasting to services;
  7. Applications of nowcasting of severe weather in public weather services, transportation, public utilities
  8. Verification and Validation;
  9. Socio-economic impact;
  10. WMO/WWRP Nowcasting-Mesoscale FDP/RDP
  11. Special Session - CAS/CAeM Aviation Research Demonstration Project (AvRDP);
